Wednesday’s itinerary was somewhat bold, Dunster Castle, Lynton, Lynmouth and Chepstow Castle in Wales.
The castle was very impressive, standing on the hill surrounded by frost covered grass fields and well-kept gardens. After a short walk round the castle grounds garden and up through the closed castle exploring as much as we could that was accessible and wanting to make the most of our two quid park, we decided to picnic our gourmet supermarket chicken and cheese rolls in one of a dozen conveniently free wooden benches in the frosty grassed field aside the carpark. It proved to be quite an impressive picnic site, a little cold on the icy seats, but a couple of plastic bags as seat liners ensured we didn’t take the ice with us.
Next we bound westward across the rolling hills of Exmoor National Park to Lynmouth and Lynton. The two tiny towns nestled at the bottom and the top of one of these hills and famously linked by an incredible steep railway (also closed for winter). By the time we made it back to the M5, it was too late for Wales and we headed for Cheltenham to get an early start for the next day.
